MICE nibble away at your possessions bit by bit, and they leave their anal droppings behind. The result can be loss, theft, degradation, or illness.

TRADITIONAL 19th CENTURY MEANINGS: theft and loss; if near the person, it is possible to recover what has been lost or stolen; if distant from the person, the loss is irretrievable.
The “Philippe Lenormand” instructions (c.1850) state that the MOUSE is a sign of theft (Diebstahl); when near to the person, there will be recovery of the thing lost (das Verlorne); but if at a distance, the loss (Verlust) will be irreparable (unersetzlich).
CORE MEANINGS: loss, theft, robbery, damage, waste, illness, fear, stress, worry, annoyance, nitpicking, depleted energy, diminution; the act of eroding or nibbling away at something, piecemeal degradation.
ALTERNATE MEANINGS: problems, pests; mice take something away, making things smaller, eat away at things; shrinkage, deterioration, decay, devaluation; doing something bit by bit. Mice soil or infect things with their droppings so that you want to avoid or get away from what has been sullied.

The mouse, a small animal, foreshadows theft to you. Therefore watch over yard and house, otherwise there will be loss (or damage) thereto.

It means theft. If it is near you, you will regain the lost object; but if the mouse is far from you, the loss will not be recoverable.
